A gastronomic tour in the outskirts of the city of Rome is a great opportunity to combine visiting beautiful picturesque towns in the mountainous surroundings of Rome, tasting the most famous types of locally produced wine, and dining in a real “frascetti”, where a caring host will offer the most delicious dishes of the local cuisine.

What to expect during the tour

We will visit the areas located on the Alban Hills and the Tuscolan Hills, which were formed by volcanic eruptions (7000 – 19,000 years BC). The Castelli Romani have long been known for the beauty of their landscapes, the villas of Roman nobility, and their unparalleled wine. Archaeological research confirms that as early as the 5th century BC, vineyards were cultivated and wine was produced here. Wines from the Roman Castles region were highly valued in antiquity and during the Renaissance when the popes enjoyed this “divine nectar.” In the 17th and 18th centuries, when it was fashionable in Europe to send children from wealthy aristocratic families to Rome to learn about ancient history, the Roman Castles were a must-visit stop on the “Grand Tour.”

What will be the itinerary of our tour

The car and guide will meet you at the hotel at the agreed time, and we will head along the ancient Appian Way to our first town, Castel Gandolfo. Here, on the shores of Lake Albano, is the summer papal residence from the 17th century, and this is where we will begin our introduction and tasting of the region’s most famous wines. In the wine cellar, the fourth-generation sommelier will present six varieties of white and red wines, which you can enjoy with freshly baked homemade bread, dipping it into olive oil, and accompanied by cheeses and cured meats. These wines are produced in very limited quantities, so they are not available in regular stores, but you will have the opportunity to purchase the wines you like best directly from the producer.

In the picturesque town of Ariccia, which predates Rome, we will visit the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (a copy of the Roman Pantheon) and the Palazzo Chigi – a baroque gem (both designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini), after which you will enjoy an exceptionally delicious and colorful lunch of traditional Roman cuisine at the famous Frascetti.

The last stop before returning to Rome will be in the town of Nemi, on the shore of the eponymous lake, where Emperor Caligula built his “Palace on the Water.” Here, you will taste an authentic dessert made with strawberries and wild strawberries, and if desired, you can visit a unique “norceria” in the region specializing in meat products. The owner will slice various types of ham and sausages and carefully wrap them in vacuum-sealed packages, which will keep the products fresh for several weeks.
