Day trip to Ostia Antica from Rome

A trip to the ancient city of Ostia, located 28 km from modern Rome, will transport you back in time, like a time machine, and allow you to experience incredible archaeological discoveries firsthand. Ostia Antica and Pompeii are among the world’s greatest archaeological sites, and you have the opportunity to journey through history with me.

What to expect during the tour

Ostia Antica, the ancient port city of Rome, was founded in the 7th century BC by one of Rome’s early kings, Ancus Marcius. However, the city truly flourished during the imperial era. You’ll find it fascinating to learn about the development of various crafts, which trades were considered prestigious, how the insulae (apartment buildings) were constructed, and how the imperial ports functioned. We’ll also explore which goods were in high demand among the people of that time.

We’ll visit the ancient Roman baths (thermae) and discover whether men and women could engage in sports and enjoy hot baths together.

Additionally, we’ll delve into the everyday life of a typical ancient Roman family, offering a glimpse into their customs and routines.

What will be the itinerary of our tour

Along the Ostian Road, there is a Necropolis with various types of burials. Passing through it, we will triumphantly enter the ancient city through the Porta Romana (Roman Gate). You will be pleasantly surprised to see the well-preserved Roman taverns (tabernae), the Baths of Neptune, and the Theater, built by a friend and ally of the first Roman Emperor, Augustus.

During our journey, we will discover the existence of laundries in ancient Rome known as “fullonicae.” You’ll be amazed by the laundry detergents used at the time, which we’ll reveal during the tour.

In addition to laundries, we’ll see the well-preserved ancient Roman toilets and learn about some fascinating hygiene practices of the ancient world. “Insulae,” “domus,” “horrea”—all these will be part of our route, along with a “mithraeum” and an early Christian basilica, making our journey through Ostia Antica truly captivating.
